For the time being, though, many artists seem to be preferring a more sensual response, revelling in oil’s devastating allure and noirish indelibility. via… I was just thinking about Molodkin the other day and was curious what he was working on.  It didn’t occur to me that it might be something reactionary to the BP spill, since it is so far away from his homeland, but now that I think about it I really hope he does produce something BP-related.

The New York Times reported this week that journalists have repeatedly been turned down when asked to fly over the spill in aircraft. It seems Warren has found a way around this issue with his mapping project. Grassroots Mapping was started as a way to break down the power structure inherent in the cartography world and give regular citizens the power to make aerial maps of just about anything. The project teaches people how to make high-definition maps of the ground from above. In the case of the Gulf Coast oil spill, Warren and the Grassroots team is releasing all photos taken of the devastation into the public domain for all to see and use as they please. Sono affascinato dalla strategia adottata dalla British Petroleum per tentare di tappare la falla: prima le palline da golf, poi i tappi di cemento, adesso vogliono propiziarsi gli dei con dei sacrifici umani.

Durante le operazioni di contenimento sono morti due tecnici, ma dal loro contratto risulta che sono stati assunti soltanto ieri.

(Anche queste le si potrebbe chiamare “morti bianche”, se non fosse tutto quel petrolio…)
